Enterprises appreciate SD-WAN because it gives them an opportunity to reduce network costs while improving security and performance. For enterprises that need to meet Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) compliance obligation, there are benefits to implementing an SD-WAN solution.
As enterprises expand to new branches, their network and security teams should consider SD-WAN. A new satellite location would not be limited to MPLS connectivity or the Internet service provider’s router to cover security with SD-WAN, which has often introduced additional complication in PCI compliance.
Instead, SD-WAN can be used to incorporate edge devices in new stores or satellite locations to add a secure network overlay that can be overseen from a centralized console. These edges can access a variety of circuits, including cable, cellular connections, or digital subscriber line (DSL) to create the overlay network.
Another option is to create a hybrid network using both public and private circuits. All of these options work to reduce the traffic on higher-priced MPLS circuits, or even for MPLS to be removed to make way for complete SD-WAN reliance.
Many of the SD-WAN options are equipped with security features at the edge and in the cloud that can be incorporated into the existing overlay network. For instance, firewall capabilities can be integrated with the edge device in order to allow for PCI network segmentation.
Traffic shaping and steering is also improved with SD-WAN, allowing for a granular-level, application-based management. These features allow for an organization to comply with PCI, while improving performance, because the need to backhaul Internet or cloud-based traffic no longer exists.
Using SD-WAN technology to expand to a branch location while maintaining compliance simplifies the compliance process for growing enterprises. Edge devices can form a boundary for PCI compliance, and cardholder data can be protected in transit with strong cryptography over all traffic from the branch’s edge devices. The main function of SD-WAN provides the ability to create a secure overlay that covers the edge devices at satellite locations, data centers and cloud gateways without overly complicating ongoing PCI compliance.
