Downtime. It can cost a business time and money. That’s not news, but truly protecting your customer’s business against outages and going offline can be a complex task. Here are five simple ways to help keep the network up and running.
How Do I Prevent Network Downtime?
A fully-running network is vital to the overall health of a company. Help keep it in fighting trim with some simple practices.
Be prepared. There are generally two causes of network outages: internal events you can control, and external events you can’t. When the power goes out, or when the internet service provider (ISP) loses connectivity, backup systems will help keep the network running even when something happens beyond your control.
Spread your preparation around. Redundancy is an excellent protective measure, but don’t let it be the only one. Having two ISPs’ worth of connectivity is a great thing, but if both of these connectivity points cross the same network routes, both systems may fail at the same time if they have common cause.
Practice internal downtime. A Gartner study found that 80% of outages are caused internally, by issues of “people and process.” While we often consider how our components are holding up and whether they need repair or replacement, we don’t extend the same courtesy to our staff. Recommend that your customer keep staff fresh and rested to help ensure they’re ready when they’re needed.
Consider automation. How hot is it in the server room? What’s the humidity like? Answering these questions can help prevent problems before they happen, and Internet of Things (IoT) systems can automate the information gathering process and present it on demand. You’ll know when a system may be overheating before it just shuts down and takes the workday with it.
Keep up. If you know best practices already, great; you’re a step ahead. Now just make sure you’re putting best practices to work. Keep up with updates, maintain firewalls, and perform similar actions to remove one significant cause of potential downtime.
