Typically, when people are looking for fiber, they think of three scenarios: going with a traditional LEC, going with a reseller, or going with a cable company. There are pros and cons to each option, and it’s important to determine which provider will be the best for your business. We have seen significant advantages in steering clear of LECs for several reasons, and have helped our partners make the most of their fiber deals by going through cable companies.
The Servicing Truth
One of the challenges of selling fiber with a LEC is that usually that LEC will say that everything is serviceable. They require you to work with the customer, get the signature, and then perform a site survey after the fact to determine whether or not they can actually deliver that fiber. Sometimes it doesn’t work out for the customer — a lose-lose.
If it does work out, the customer is then responsible for deploying fiber from the demarcation point into their suite.
Don’t get me wrong, there is a pro to going with a LEC: fast pricing information is nothing to sniff at. But, in turn, you don’t know for 4-6 weeks if the LEC can service your customer until the site survey is complete.
With cable companies — while they may take 5-7 days to name the price — they make up for that delay with several benefits:
- They find out exactly what the build costs are
- They then cover 100% of the build costs over the term of the contract
- Pre-site surveys mean you know if the installation is doable from the outset
- They extend the demarcation to the customer’s suite before providing a service level agreement to the port in their equipment.
Overall, it’s a different philosophy compared to the LECs.
The Flavors of Fiber
Another benefit to working with cable companies lies in the many flavors of fiber delivery available — it’s not just dedicated internet access. We’re talking layer 2, ENS (ethernet networks services), DIA, and more. With the proper engineering, we can solve any customer requirement with the services that the cable companies already have in their networks.
The ease of doing business and delivering fiber to our customers is what we are all after. Cable companies make it happen. We put resources, tech tools, and people in place to help agents do business with the cable companies, and our customers couldn’t be happier.
